How to Tell Your Boss You are Burned Out
Like many people, I wasn’t prepared for a worldwide Pandemic. Ninety days of travel across the U.S. to teach supervisory development to TSA employees was canceled, as well as my onsight American University teaching assignments and my scheduled business workshops. As I began the difficult process of transitioning to teaching virtually, I heard from people that they were more stressed than ever because their supervisors were overloading them with work.
As organizations struggled to maintain mission operations, I don’t think many supervisors were prepared to supervise employees remotely. As a result, employees were more burned out than ever trying to juggle work, family, isolation, and loneliness. Classic symptoms of Pandemic burnout include feeling overwhelmed, anxious, resentful about increased workload, hopeless, and exhausted.
According to Ron Carucci, co-founder, and managing partner at Navalent, here are some tips on how to tell your boss you are burned out.
- Stop denying there’s a problem. Although you may feel uncomfortable speaking to your boss, you must tell them what you are experiencing. Over time, undue stress on our bodies will take a toll on our overall health.
- Confront your flawed “help narrative. Many business professionals struggle with asking for help because they think it makes them appear weak or incapable. Chances are your boss has already detected something is amiss.
- Clarify what you are experiencing. Make sure you approach the conversation by acknowledging that this is hard for you. You could say something like, “I’m not used to asking for help, so this is difficult for me.” Be specific about what you are experiencing. You could also take responsibility for your effect on others, such as the quality or timeliness of work or personal relationships.
- Start with a colleague or friend. If it feels too risky to open up to your boss, you could have the conversation with someone else first, such as a coach, mentor, friend, or close colleague.
- Appeal, but don’t complain. Make sure you have the conversation when you aren’t feeling fed up and that your discussion does not come across as blaming or venting. Make it clear that you ask for help and want to be part of the solution.
- Take time to soul search. Check your “inner narrative” and make sure to separate fact from fiction. Most importantly, ensure you establish a self-care routine.
- Don’t get complacent. After speaking with your boss, you may feel increased energy. However, taking care of yourself is a long game. You must prioritize your health and wellbeing.
